” Highest Mountain in Indonesia and also of The Seven Summit List ”

A unique landscape in the depth of Papua jungle, The Middle Mountain Range was the backbone of the island. It stretches thousand of kilometers along the island and rises above 4,000 meter above sea level. This was the highest mountain range lie on an island. Among this towering mountain range were Carstensz Pyramid (4,884m), the highest point in Australasian continents and also one of the Seven Summits. New Guinea Island itself divided into two regions, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. And Carstensz Pyramid was in the Indonesian region called Papua.

Reaching Carstensz peak is not only about climbing the mountain. It starts with a 5-6 days trekking through dense jungle and meadow. And we can also interact with the indigenous peoples, which 20 years ago still live like in a stone age but now was pushed to a boundary of modernize people. But still they could maintain the way of living like their ancestors do.

The jungle and meadow trek was the toughest part, after that we reach Carstensz Base Camp. And then, it’s just one more day to the peak besides acclimatization day. Climbing Carstensz Pyramid is quite technical cause we have to climb the face using fixed rope.

Around Carstensz Pyramid, there’s also another interesting peak to climb. Puncak Jaya (4,864m), Puncak Sumantri (4,870m), and East Carstensz (4,813m) where the last equatorial glacier remains. And Idenburg Peak (4.730 mdpl), the earliest peak that lost its glacier. The equatorial glacier was the main reason why the first pioneer came here, for its uniqueness cause there’s only three place in the world that snow exist in equator area. Another is Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the Peruvian Andes. Now, the glacier is in an alarming state. The retreating glacier is the main issue.
